Christian Falk responds to rumours Liverpool pursued Bayern chief Christoph Freund
6h ago3 min read
Liverpool have not made their interest in Christoph Freund public, if it exists to begin with. However, as Christian Falk noted on the CF Bayern Insider Podcast, it would not be entirely unreasonable for suspicion to be raised at the Bayern chiefβs apparent hesitation before signing a contract extension. Nonetheless, the 49-year-old has committed to an extended stay at the Allianz Arena, penning a deal until June 2029. If reports are to be believed, Liverpool Football Club are believed to be a fan of Freundβs recent work. And it wouldnβt be the first time the Austrian has attracted interest from the Premier League, with fellow English top-flight giants Chelsea having previously made a move. However, as Falk reports: βWe havenβt yet heard specifically about reported Liverpool interest in Christoph Freund. However, I will note it was interesting that the Bayern sporting director appeared to hesitate a few weeks ago over signing a new contract. So, perhaps there was something in the air! βHowever, equally, we have to acknowledge that Freund had a big opportunity to go to one of Liverpoolβs Premier League rivals, Chelsea, in the past β and he didnβt. This is because heβs a family guy who currently lives at home with his family in Salzburg. Itβs about an hour and a half or two to the club (depending on traffic) from his family home. βThis is something to consider regarding interest from abroad, as it would be difficult for Christoph Freund to move quite a way away from home. Heβs feeling quite confident at Bayern also. βThere were just a few questions about how he can work in his role alongside the director of sport, Max Eberl. But heβs doing a lot of good work over at the Campus. There were many talks about such things internally, but I think it wasnβt a big option for the future.β So, there you have it, more than a βsimpleβ complication over compensation or the package Freund could earn at another top European club. Mind, the Merseysiders do have a swathe of exciting options within their own ranks, including Julian Ward and perhaps even FSG hire Pedro Marques. You can feel it in the air: FC Bayern are destined for great things again this season. Perhaps, dare we say it, even historic moments, with the club chasing a first Champions League title under Vincent Kompany (and a first since 2020). And a key part driving this push, and an incredible strain of football under the Belgian head coach, is the clubβs united plan off the pitch. After a summer of reported uncertainty around Max Eberlβs position at the club, both the German and sporting director Christoph Freund have committed their futures to Munich. Two key figures with starring roles behind arguably some of Bayernβs best business in decades between the Campus and the senior side. Freundβs continued work at Bayern Munich may not be good news for Andoni Iraolaβs Liverpool, but it almost certainly bodes well for the future direction of the Bavarian giants.
